How Do I Know If My Monitor Is the Right Height for Me?

How Do I Know If My Monitor Is the Right Height for Me?

If you spend hours at a desk, monitor position matters more than almost any accessory.

Many of us spend hundreds of dollars on chairs, keyboards, and mice while staring at a screen that's sitting six inches too low. Big mistake, huge.

Over time, that can contribute to:

  • Neck pain
  • Shoulder tension
  • Upper back discomfort
  • Eye strain

The good news is that finding the right monitor height is actually pretty straightforward.

The Quick Rule

When sitting naturally:

The top of your monitor should be roughly at eye level.

That means:

  • You're looking slightly downward at the center of the screen
  • Your neck remains neutral
  • Your shoulders stay relaxed

(Bullets two and three also relevant for yoga, meditation, and life in general.)

You shouldn't need to tilt your head up or down to see the middle of the display.

A Simple Test

Sit comfortably.

Close your eyes.

Look straight ahead.

Open your eyes.

Where are you looking?

Ideally, your gaze should land somewhere near the top third of your monitor.

If you're looking at the bottom bezel or above the screen entirely, probably time for an adjustment.

Signs Your Monitor Is Too Low

  • Chin tucked constantly (this one's a killer)
  • Neck soreness after gaming (who needs that?)
  • Rounded shoulders (yuck, c'mon)
  • Looking downward all day (buddy!)

This is the most common setup issue.

Signs Your Monitor Is Too High

  • Neck feels tight at the base of the skull
  • Looking upward during long sessions
  • Dry eyes
  • Shoulder tension

Less common, but still problematic.

Distance Matters Too

A monitor can be the correct height but still be too close.

A good starting point:

An arm's length away.

For larger displays, slightly farther is often more comfortable.

What About Multiple Monitors?

The monitor you use most should sit directly in front of you.

Avoid spending hours twisting your neck toward a secondary display. You're not a CTU analyst.

Easy Ways to Fix Monitor Height

  • Monitor arm
  • Monitor riser
  • Stack of books (finally a use for that copy of Gravity's Rainbow you bought)
  • Adjustable standing desk

The goal isn't perfection.

It's keeping your neck in a comfortable, neutral position.

Final Thoughts

Most gaming discomfort develops slowly.

You don't wake up one day with terrible posture.

It happens after thousands of hours spent looking at a screen that's slightly out of position.

A small adjustment today can make a big difference over the next few years.

Your monitor should fit you... not the other way around.
